On your scheduled appointment day, the targeted area for hair removal will be prepped to ensure the best possible results. This includes washing the area and applying a special lotion which helps the hair follicle absorb more energy from the laser.

The right energy settings for the laser will vary from person to person, depending on the pigmentation level of your skin and hair as well as how sensitive the targeted area is. After the proper intensity level is determined, the laser will be directed at the root of your hair follicles. The pigmentation of your hair absorbs the energy from the laser, so those with dark hair will absorb more energy than those with lighter hair. The energy from the laser causes a portion of the hair follicles to die off permanently. A series of nine treatments is needed so that hairs in an ‘inactive’ growth phase can be treated.

The procedure itself varies in length, depending on the size of the area to be targeted. For example, small areas may only take a few minutes, while larger areas may take an hour or more. There may be some discomfort during the procedure, which is often described as comparable to snapping a rubber band on your skin. Topical anesthetic can be applied to minimize discomfort.

The effectiveness of treatment may depend on your natural hair and skin pigmentation levels. Since those with greater pigmentation are able to absorb greater amounts of laser energy, the treatment is often more effective on those with dark hair. It’s important to be patient during the process and maintain realistic expectations about the results.

Following the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling or redness which often dissipates in just a few hours. There is usually not any lasting discomfort. Over the next few weeks, the affected hair will separate from its follicle and fall out. Tanning should be avoided both before and after laser hair removal.
